Chinese player Peng Shuai has “reconfirmed” she is safe and well in a second phone call with the IOC.
The 32-year-old player was labelled “missing” on social media on Thursday, but the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said it was not in her best interests to address the media.
But following the call she tweeted: “Thanks to the head of the IOC phone line for confirmation that I am safe and well!”
She had taken the unusual decision to tweet a photo of her playing tennis.
Peng, who is ranked 56th in the world, won her first match on the road to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after a tournament first-round bye.
The post was later deleted.
The ITF said it was “too premature to say” whether Peng could now be fit to play next week’s women’s gold medal match.
This is the second time Peng has suffered a blow to her career in the last two years.
In 2017, she pulled out of the Shanghai Open because of a recurring wrist injury.
