Authorities say a man suspected of firing shots near a Canadian Mounted Police station in British Columbia is in custody.
B.C. RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said officers found and detained the suspect Saturday in the suburb of New Westminster, northwest of Vancouver. He said police don’t believe the incident is terrorist-related.
A report came in about a weapon being fired near a police station in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Two officers fired their weapons. No one was hurt.
Moskaluk said he didn’t have details on the suspect but said he lives in the Vancouver area.
Moskaluk said the investigation is ongoing. He said officers searched the area but didn’t find the weapon.
Abbotsford resident Mark Robinson, 23, told the Associated Press that he saw two police cars blocking off a street with their lights flashing. At first, he thought the officers were responding to a drive-by shooting, but then he realized they were shooting at something.
Another neighbor, 43-year-old Renata Elme, said she saw an orange flash and then heard three shots.
The U.S. Embassy warned U.S. citizens in Vancouver that police could be searching for someone nearby. Canadian authorities advised Canadians to keep their distance from police.
