Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thinks that the reason Democrats lost the House in 2018 was because they spent more than the Republicans. She is not the first Democrat to say this. Her logic follows this line of reasoning:
When they started running on the same message four years ago, Democrats ran on the economy. When they were on the same message four years ago, they ran on the same message four years ago. Her claim is a little misleading. The economy was always the “new message” the Democrats ran on, and the “same message” four years ago.
The Democrats won on the economy in the 2018 midterm elections. They won because they ran on the same economic message that had been running on the same economic message four years earlier. Pelosi and her Democratic Party were able to run on the economic message and the same economic message four times in a row. That was a big win.
But they were hardly the only Democrats who could run on the economy four years earlier, and win.
