Granderson: ‘They go low, we go high’? Great plan. But have you seen how low Republicans will go? They won’t get the chance.
So what does this all mean? It means that the Republican Party has failed in its two most important objectives to date: to prevent Obama from winning a second term, and to prevent the Republicans from nominating a president who can lead the party into the future. Instead of embracing their most important ideological base, and giving it everything it has asked for, they have instead tried to force the middle-of-the-roaders into the most conservative and ideologically non-sensible place on the spectrum through the use of social issues, and through an unwillingness to make compromises. And when those middle-of-the-roaders did not play ball, they have used their power in the Congress to make sure that their ideology would take over.
This is as un-American an approach as one could imagine, and it’s an approach that is now only likely to hurt America in the long run.
