Agency head resigns after investigation into alleged misconduct

The head of the Orange County Transportation Authority resigns Friday, after an investigation of alleged misconduct in the handling of contracts involving the authority.

The authority is a major source of funding for public transportation in Orange County. The authority is the largest private transit operator in the county with more than 40 lines in 22 cities.

The Orange County Transportation Authority, as it was called at the time, has come under fire on several occasions, including a two-year federal investigation.

The investigation is led by the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration Office of Regulatory Reform, Investigations and Oversight (OIG) into allegations of noncompliance with the law and violations of civil rights laws in the award of a $1.7 million contract that could have gone to a private transit operator.

The contract is one of two awarded that were supposed to go to the Southern California Area Metropolitan Transit Authority, but a dispute between the two agencies ended up in federal court.
